On Butterfly Fish by Irenosen Okojie

When Irenosen Okojie read the extract (see here) from her book at the London Short Story Festival I was hooked. I bought the book and wasn’t disappointed. If you are on the hunt for a good read from a new writer, Butterfly Fish is one to try. It’s a story set in 19th century Benin, Lagos 1950s & contemporary London. Written in first and third person, Irenosen uses rich imagery entwined with magical realism to weave a tale about four generations connected by a brass head, tradition and family secrets. Definitely worth reading.
